But the point is dance music is about beat and repetition. Was listening to Haydn string quartets myself this morning. Musicality and dance music aren't normally in the same sentence. LOLīased on the feedback here I'd say it's probably more genre specific but a great discussion none the less. I don't know, but I can tell you something I probably wouldn't like. Had I just transposed this over to an analog poly synth it would have sounded like. It also opened up a lot of space in the song for other instruments to weave in and out of the mix. Approaching it this way kept a hair of a jazz vibe but definitely made it an electronic music piece through and through. On piano the original way sounded a bit old school jazz to some degree. I went back and recorded this now with the hook in mind and changed up some parts that backed the vocal melody removing the original chord progression entirely. I headed over to a very fat three oscillator mono synth and tuned it to a faux 7th chord. I noticed that immediately and took note. I started out writing it on piano and was using mostly 7th chords. Getting back to my earlier post about a recent song I'm working on. Many times when I write something on piano or guitar around a chord progression I'll dissect it and fill it out with multiple instruments as it creates more breathing room for the piece and makes it more interesting in my opinion. I might even hum something in my head and score it. Even if later I drop the pad, strings, or stabs, its still the framework from which the song started.Generally for my writing style an idea can start with a chord progression, drum beat, bass line, or even a lyric line. I'd say 80% of the time an idea is born on a chord progression.

įor me though its just more my writing style. I like to reward the makers who understand this. I am very frustrated with some otherwise good synths because of this lack. it's one of the first things I look for in a new synth, because mono playing options are extremely important to me. The makers who don't understand this are limiting the appeal of their synth. The good synth designers provide all options - because the players who understand this require it. I really, really wish that synth makers (hardware and plugin) would always give users all options of Note Priority because there are strengths and weaknesses with all types. And it's a lot easier to give users a choice of Note Priority. With digital it's a lot easier to make logical decisions.

I'm guessing this was done when DSP took over the control (if not the actual sound engine) of synths. Modern synths tends to implement Last Note Played priority - which can be quite good and sort of the best of both worlds. fantastic for guitar synth BTW.īut - the Japanese synth makes and others for some reason decided to choose Highest Note Priority - which requires a different playing style but opens up some different musical ideas. You can also exploit Low Note Priority for extract the bass note out of a played chord. and there are many classic bass lines and lead solos that exploit Low Note Priority. like you can hold down a note and play an octave below with glide turned on - and the oscillators glide down to the low octave and then return to the higher note. And that causes players to do some really cool musical things. Moog chose to always play the Lowest note. obviously when a player chooses to overlap two or more notes on a keyboard the circuit has to decide which note to play. I guess this was done due to engineering limitations of the time. I believe the original Moogs were Low Note Priority. The thing with any mono synth is to understand the key priority. The way I fingered them would be fine on any poly, but the MiniMoog wouldn't think so. I've never owned a mono, but when I had access to one, the thing that drove me nuts was grace notes. Until ultimately they know everything there is to know about nothing. That's like, your opinion, man. But just be aware that a specialist learns more and more about less and less. You appear to have a very specialized interest in music (if i'm allowed to call it music?). perhaps too many lame karaoke performers used them because they didn't have any skill - but don't blame the techlogy for that. It's quite helpful, for example, to recieve a midi file and to have some concept that the track is supposed to be played by drumkit rather than a bass or strings or a flute. it helps in file sharing between different brands of synth. You might prefer to listen to atonal music, but the majority of the planet finds comfort in harmony - in tension and release, not just constant tension. In my opinion, the really cool music borrows the best of the best from all sources, old and new.
